The 'You Can't Explain That' meme originated from a 2011 interview between Fox News host Bill O'Reilly and American Atheists president David Silverman. During a segment on The O'Reilly Factor, O'Reilly attempted to prove the existence of a higher power by pointing to the predictability of the tides, famously stating, 'Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can’t explain that.' The internet immediately latched onto the illogical nature of his argument, as the moon's gravitational pull easily explains the tides. Since then, the template has been used to mock pseudoscience, baffling coincidences, or any situation where someone uses flawed logic to justify an absurd opinion.
